My mom is hard to shop for but she loves to cook. She is also getting more and more environmentally concious. This gift combo of an apron and a tote bag is perfect for her! A tote to carry her groceries and then an apron to put on to cook when she gets home. To really wow someone you could even fill the tote with groceries or include a gift card for a local market.
I got both the plain cotton apron and tote bag from Dharma Trading Co for less than $10 total and then decorated them with freezer paper stencils.
I simply drew the design with pencil on the freezer paper, cut it out with an exacto, ironed it in place and painted the design. I let it dry overnight and the peeled off the freezer paper.
You could also dye the apron or tote easily...but I've decided to leave them natural.
The flower heads on the tote were made from the cut out shapes from the apron pattern. This saved time (no additional exacto cutting) and it made the apron and tote coordinate. Every time I think I'm done with freezer paper stenciling I find another use for it. Fabric napkins, tableclothes, shower curtains, pillow cases...what is next?
